Now that all of you are educating yourselves
about Tourette Syndrome it is imperative that
you educate the teachers your children come into
contact with. Most teachers know little if
anything about TS. I taught for 33 years, and
only really learned about TS when my gandson was
diagnosed. Now I make presentations to school
faculties, and just about anyone who will listen!

My husband has Tourette's and through the years
I've noticed that the ticks are increasing in
severity. He is very sensitive about the
subject and wouldn't look for help or discuss
the subject, but it's getting to the point that
it's almost unbearable to be next to him. I'm
just looking for tools to help me deal with this
and to hear from other people in the same
situation. Thanks for your website.

I just want to thank you for the positive
nature of your website and your warnings re:
old literature. I am just now realizing this is
why my husband licks his fingers and clears his
throat repeatedly throughout the day. If its
not hurting any one, should I even mention it
to him? He was diagnosed with Adult ADHD about
8 years ago and he is a bit OCD but neither
impede in his work. He tends to have some
grandiose thoughts though. Thats worrisome, but
then again, sometimes he really reaches those
goals so who is to say they are grandiose?
Should I ask for a diagnosis or just be
thankful for the information and move on. Its
just a label right?

I have noticed ticks in my son since age 4 but
was diagnosed with TS until age 5. He just

His grades are slipping and there seems no end
to his downward spiral. It's breaking my heart.
Can someone offer any info or website on
dealing with the person with TS and not simply
the condition itself?

remembered reading this webpage when we first

My son has not been diagnosed with TS yet, but
his tics have been comming and going since he
was about 5 years old. They disappear for long
periods of time and then tend to reappear after
an illness or stress. His neurologist does not
feel the tics are severe and does not want to
perscribe meds (nor do I or my son want to take
anything). Recently he had a horrible reaction
to pseudoeffedrine (Tylenol Cold Medication)
since that time the tics have been visable and
very uncomfortable for him. He is 15 years old

I have to say that after 4 years of being aware
of my son's tourettes, this is the first
positive feedback I've read. I have gone
through the same frightening feelings that many
others have had. I was devistated and
unwilling to accept this at first, desperate to
find a cure. Thank goodness for this website!
How comforting! My question is this. I
haven't mentioned the word "tourettes" to my
son or explained it. I've been afraid he would
feel labeled and I didn't want him to learn how
terrible the prognosis was (until now). I felt
that if he heard that "this is what TS children
do", he might develop those particular things.
Should I tell him that this is what he has,
and,if so, how should I go about this?" Any
advise would be welcome. Thank you so much for
this website!

PPPPPPS: A doctor once told me, that he wanted

PPPPPPPS: Each day of this month lasted over a

PPPPPPPPS: This month had very long days didn't

Sorry folks, but I agree with Dr. Laura. A
wedding is all about the bride and groom. If
they are selfish, and insensitive enough to not
want anyone there with concerns, issues, or
problems, thats just fine, they just need to
understand that that means, NO cards, gifts,
invites and possibly very limited contact with
the hurt, slighted, and offended family
members. Personally, I wish my wedding
reception could have been limited to guests 16
years and up, as children cause distractions,
and most of them are unruly.

Although our son, age 7, has not been officially
diagnosed with ts, I have no doubt this is the
case. The first symptoms appeared around age
5. This was eye blinking, then sniffing, then
facial grimmaces, strange knee-knocking while
walking, and most recently a rapid neck bending
motion (face upwards to sky). It seems worse
when he is playing sports (which he loves and
does very well in) and is trying to perform well
in some way, such as taking a test. My other
concerns are behaviors such as anxiety and
panicky behaviors including crying, stomach
aches, headaches, etc. when going to school. He
also seems to be intolerant of others'
behaviors, especially misbehavior of others,
including his friends. I am concerned that he
will begin to be picked-on at school because of
his tics and the fact that he is not very
outgoing. Although he is extremely bright,
athletic, and very well-behaved in school, and
his teachers say he gets along well with others,
I can't help but feel there is just SOMETHING
else going on with him. I would really
appreciate any advice, information on your
experiences with similar children, or just
anything you could tell me in figuring out what
this sounds like to you.

I was so happy to find your site and read your
story. I have 3 sons, 2 of whom have TS.
They're fraternal twins. One son
was "diagnosed" last year, but I had
unofficially diagnosed him many years ago. I'm
in the health care profession (rehabilitation,
to be specific), so I have been exposed to many
individuals with varying conditions.

My other son revealed some tics that he has but
hides well, although I notice them at times.
He, on his own, tells me that he knows he has TS
but doesn't feel the need to go to a Neurologist
at this point. I respect his decision.

When I received my son's diagnosis, it didn't
affect me in the least. Both my sons (13 years
of age) sound like yours. Honors students,
musicians, one into acting and singing,
friends, social and, most importantly,
kind/altruistic people.

I've realized some possible OCD traits. No
matter how hard he tries, my diagnosed son can't
get out of the shower before 20 minutes. My
suspicion is that he has a ritual. He washes
his hands frequently (not noticable to others),
but he also has never been sick or lost a day of
school! When I told my sons to stop bugging him
about the shower since it may not be something
he can control, his response was: "I like
having TS. Now I can blame EVERYTHING on it!"
We have to keep in mind not to let him get away
with too much, since we don't want secondary
gain to occur with this diagnosis!!

I'm also reflecting on my life and certain
things are making so much sense for me, since I
feel as though I'm an undiagnosed TS
individual. I've had many symptoms in past
years, very subtle, but I've known I had them.
I blamed things totally on stress and anxiety,
and now I have answers for them!! I don't think
it's an accident that I'm in the rehabilitation
field.

My oldest son (16) has not exhibited any TS
symptoms.

I realize the waxing and waning of TS, but I
feel prepared for anything. I love my children,
we have a good, open relationship, and we'll be
able to deal with whatever comes our way. I'm
not opposed to getting help if it's needed. In
fact, my oldest sons friend has TS, and I've
spoken to his mother.

I've told parents of my son's closest friends,
and there kids didn't even notice. They just
thought Matt's tics were just "Matthew." How
wonderful!!

Thanks for letting me share my story, and thanks
for sharing yours. What a wonderful site you've
created!!

have undiagnosed OCD, possible slight TS. I
have many tics that drive me up a wall! It
gets worse in public because I try to not do
them, which causes stress. Many of them
include the cracking of my knuckles, especially
my thumbs which are very sore yet I can't
stop. I just added this site to my favorites
so I can peruse it more often and join the
message board. I just wanted to give kudos to

disclaimer at the bottom of the page that says
she is "just a mom" (cute) I think this web
site is wonderfully informational and well put

Hey there, I'm glad websites like this are up
to inform people about Tourette. I'm suffering
with Tourette since my 6th, am 21 now, so I
have quite a lot of experience under my belt. I
learnt how to deal with Tourette, particulary
as I got older. I gained more confidence and
people in my environment learnt that acceptance
is the best 'cure', or at least the best way to
reduce it as much as possible. It's going
really well 'cause my tics nearly vanished
actually. :) I got an horrible peak when I was
11, 12. Anyway, I'm a happy man now who just
leads an ordinary life. For all the people
who're going through tough phases, I'd say keep

I came to this web site by way of doing research
for a paper for a class. I must add I am a
senior learner and really didn't know why I
choose Tourette syndrome when the instructor
assigned a paper on any disease you wish to
explore. After doing research on TS I realized
that there were children I went to elementary
school, over fifty years ago, that probably had
undiagnosed TS and I shutter to think how I
teased them along with my fellow classmates.
How ironic that in later life I became a medical
social worker specializing in neurologic
disorders. Life has a way of teaching us the
lessons we need to learn. Keep up you vaulable
work in bring hope and information for these are
two mighty tools to a brighter future.

It was explaned to me by Dr. Jankovic of Baylor
College of Medicine that the medication is not
available in the US yet. It is called an
investigational drug (because not approved by
the USDA yet). It is my understanding it is
only available thru Baylor. Has anybody
experience with this drug?

Hello

My son Jordan was diagnosed with ts when he was
11 years old. He is now 21 years old and a fine
young man. He was diagnosed with ts, adhd and
obsessive compulsive disorder. Jordan is going
to college and works part time as an assistant
chef for a greek restaurant. I am very proud of
my son. He has overcome many challenges and
works hard every day. I couldn't ask for a
better son and I am extremely proud of him. His
ts is very mild now. It does wax and wane and
right now he is not on any medication. He was
on halperidol, paxil and ritilin. If he feels
the need to go back on the meds he will.

I am very glad I found this website and hope
others will never give up on themselves and
those they know who are afflicted with this.

Hi my son was diagnosed with Ts when he was 4
years old. I have never heard about until he was
diagnosed. He is 17 now and the older he gets
the more ticks he has. The school where he goes
is giving him a hard time. I got so tried of them
saying he was a bad kid, that i went to the book
store and bought this book called "Teaching the
Tiger". The school principle read the book and
thank me for the information. I do alot of
research on Ts to see if any new information is
wondering around. Just remember that you are not
alone keep finding new information and learn
more on Ts. I have learned alot these past 13
years and still learning. One more thing join a
Ts support group it helps to talk to other
people who has Ts or has a family member with it.

I just found my way to your website as part of
my researching PANDAS and the recent movement
disorder/tics/ocd behaviours that my son
developed after another bout with strep. I'm so
glad, so thankful, that I found yours as one of
the first, and not one of the other more
pessimistic sites. Thank you! Those two little
words seem so inadequate but it's all I have.
I'm 45 years old with a 21 yo and an 8 yo. I've
tic'd all my life, that I can remember. Was
humiliated by my parents and family far more
than by friends. Never realized just how many
TS symptoms, OCD and ADD symptoms I have until
today. We are going to a pyschologist
tomorrow. Don't know that he'll be able to deal
with TS, at least in a positive way, but we were
initially seeing him because of the 8yo's
depression from the recent movement disorder and
how it has isolated him. Anyway...this
knowledge puts a new spin on things. We'll see
how the psychologist approaches this. I do see
so many symptoms of TS with both my boys,
myself, my siblings, nephews, and father.
Husband has some TS symptoms, OCD and ADD
symptoms and so does his siblings and mother.
Also alcoholism runs rampant in our families and
it was surprising to see the comment in FAQ's
about how TS is related to a disorder in
dopamine, just like the biochemical markers of
alcoholism. I think our families have probably
been self-medicating all these years with the
alcohol. Hmmmm. Interesting.

Again, thanks so much for your undying effort,
compassion, and concern. You've made the world
a better place, with or without TS.

My son is 12 and has Tourettes. We are going
through a difficult time right now with his
behaviour rather than his 'ticcing'. He is a
lovly, kind boy 99% of the time.. but his
temper and stubborness gets the better of him
the rest of the time causing rows and
unhappiness for us all. We have done lots of
research about what he is or may be going
through and it has started to help the way we
handle certain situations. We have come to
understand that he doesnt see most things
as 'getting his own way' but more a case of
something that he 'has to do' like a
compulsion.. and untill he has completed
whatever it is, then he is agitated and unruly.
Finding this out has helped a lot. All we can
do is support him, and show him lots of love as
often he says he feels like his life is over
and he wishes he wasnt here. Hopefully he will
improve as he gets older and has a better
understanding of TS.

heart just aches for him.I also worry about him
getting in trouble at school for it even though
I have told the teacher about it.(Im not sure
she gets it )Some of his friends have asked him
why he makes faces and he tells them nothing is
happening or just ignores them. I dont know if
that is the best thing to do or not. He knows
its happening and i think he trys to supress it
sometimes. I also need to know what to do with
obsessive compulsive situations.I saw this sight
and it looked like a positive place to be. I say
so what to TS , but I feel diferently inside.I
hope I will find some answers so I can be strong

Regarding the Dr. Laura issue:
If I go to a family wedding with my child and
he/she can even possibly be noisy, then I make
sure and only go to the reception because I do
not want to cause undo attention that takes
away from the ceremony.

If the bride came to me and said, "Please bring
your child, I really want him/her there", then
I might think about it.

Hi, I'm a mother of three, and my middle boy who

his throat, stretching his nose and mouth, and
lets out a scream every now and again. My
husband and I have not really thought about TS
to each other, but recently I started to think
about TS and is that what the problem is. I
just need to hear from other parents who's child
is diagnosed with TS, and what made them seek
help, or how were they diagnosed with TS. I
don't have a computer at home, right now I am in
