Now that all of you are educating yourselves about Tourette Syndrome it is imperative that you educate the teachers your children come into contact with. Most teachers know little if anything about TS. I taught for 33 years, and only really learned about TS when my gandson was diagnosed. Now I make presentations to school faculties, and just about anyone who will listen!

My husband has Tourette's and through the years I've noticed that the ticks are increasing in severity. He is very sensitive about the subject and wouldn't look for help or discuss the subject, but it's getting to the point that it's almost unbearable to be next to him. I'm just looking for tools to help me deal with this and to hear from other people in the same situation. Thanks for your website.

I just want to thank you for the positive nature of your website and your warnings re: old literature. I am just now realizing this is why my husband licks his fingers and clears his throat repeatedly throughout the day. If its not hurting any one, should I even mention it to him? He was diagnosed with Adult ADHD about 8 years ago and he is a bit OCD but neither impede in his work. He tends to have some grandiose thoughts though. Thats worrisome, but then again, sometimes he really reaches those goals so who is to say they are grandiose? Should I ask for a diagnosis or just be thankful for the information and move on. Its just a label right?

I just saw on Paula Z this evening a story on TS. I am 39 years old and believe I may have been suffering from TS my whole life. I have never heard of TS until PZ. But believing is not a diagnosis. I want to talk to a professional who can accertain, from my symptoms, whether or not I am even close to what causes my tic. TS or ?

I have noticed ticks in my son since age 4 but was diagnosed with TS until age 5. He just recently started a new school and is having a tough time adjusting and making new friends. His grades are slipping and there seems no end to his downward spiral. It's breaking my heart. Can someone offer any info or website on dealing with the person with TS and not simply the condition itself?

my daughter was recently diagnosed with TS adhd and ocd. She is now 9 years old. Since she was 4 1/2, we were told she was adhd, mutiple personalyties, bipolar, PDD autism and now TS. I was was wondering if their is a doctor that can tell me exactly what my child has. how do the sibling cop and how do parents cope with all the children involved. How do you make people around you understand that she is ill and not badly raised.

My grandson Matthew was diagnosed yesterday with TS, accompanied with ADHD. He is 6 years old and has had a terrible time at school. How do we, as a family, help him. We suspected ADHD, but not TS. Please help us help him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like to find a chat room to share information with others. If you know of a chat room that would be beneficial, please let me know.

Thankyou so much for this web page of hope and understanding. My son is presently having one of his hardest times with t.s. It certainly is milder than alot I have read about, and in fact for about the last three months it has been almost nonexistent. It is diffently harder for me than for him. He is eight years old. I remembered reading this webpage when we first found out he had ts at five years old. I needed the balance you have to offer. God Bless you. eric.

We have been aware of tourette's and the overlapping conditions of adhd, ocd for over 17 years. For many reasons we are hoping for that "eureka" breakthrough which may not help us, but lead to easier lives for others.

This will be really helpful since I now have a son with the same symtoms. He has some physical ticks but they aren't that serious and I hope he will outgrow them as many people, including me, do. My son has not been diagnosed with TS yet, but his tics have been comming and going since he was about 5 years old. They disappear for long periods of time and then tend to reappear after an illness or stress. His neurologist does not feel the tics are severe and does not want to perscribe meds (nor do I or my son want to take anything). Recently he had a horrible reaction to pseudoeffedrine (Tylenol Cold Medication) since that time the tics have been visable and very uncomfortable for him. He is 15 years old and he is very concerned about going back to school this way. What can I do to help him?

I have to say that after 4 years of being aware of my son's tourettes, this is the first positive feedback I've read. I have gone through the same frightening feelings that many others have had. I was devistated and unwilling to accept this at first, desperate to find a cure. Thank goodness for this website! How comforting! My question is this. I haven't mentioned the word "tourettes" to my son or explained it. I've been afraid he would feel labeled and I didn't want him to learn how terrible the prognosis was (until now). I felt that if he heard that "this is what TS children do", he might develop those particular things. Should I tell him that this is what he has, and,if so, how should I go about this?" Any advise would be welcome. Thank you so much for this website!

My 11 year old son was recently diagnosed with ts. his tics began when he was almost 4 years old when i took him to the dr. they said they wanted him tested for add- ??? so i never took him back, until a few months ago i demanded he see a specialist @ IUPUI and after spending about 3 minutes with michael she new exactly what i had been saying for7 years. it wasnt a surprise, just a Thank God!! Now he has been taking 1/2 a mg of Guanfacine (generic form of Tenex) for 2 months now and he is doing fabulous! he had pretty bad motor tics and some vocal, throat clearing and grunting. It is so wonderful to have my smiling, happy child back. now i would like to speak with other parents or introduce michael to children with ts so he can meet kids like him. any info would be great.

My DD age 13 1/2 is ATTEMPTING TO COPE with as she calls it, her newly sentenced "TS, OCD AND possible ADHD"... As a result I am attempting desperately to tread water and remain afloat between the outbursts. While she as at school I try to pick up the slack and research all I can. Thanks for a great web site... we are destined to take our journey on a path I now know has been there a long time, but we have just payed the toll and gotten on that road... I need the stregth to reassure, remain calm, and tolerant, and guide her.

MY SON, 9 YEARS OLD HAS JUST STARTED HAVING SOME NECK TWITCHES, WHEN THIS STARTED, I THOUGHT BACK TO THIS PAST YEAR, WHEN HE HAS DISPLAYED OTHER MOTOR TICS (I THINK) EYE TWITCHES, MOUTH POPPING,ALL LASTED A SHORT TIME. THIS TIME, IT SEEMS TO BE EFFECTING HIME MORE, IT ACTUALLY HURTS HIM. WE HAVE AN APPOINTMENT IN A FEW DAYS, AND OF COURSE, MY THOUGHTS HAVE BEEN OF TOURRETTS, EVEN THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN NO VERBAL SIGNS. HE IS A GREAT ATHLETE AND STUDENT, BUT I CAN ALREADY SEE A CHANGE IN HIS PERSONALITY. THE LAST FEW DAYS HAVE BEEN TOUGH, NEEDLESS TO SAY AND SLEEPLESS.

While looking for information on PANDAS I came across your page. We see so many patients that have found particular providors that encourage various treatment options that seem questionable at best. Our practice has seen the IVIG approach, hyperbaric oxegen treatment, chelation and many others. It's sad that so many are taken advantage of by fringe medicine, but so many are so desperate.

I read your view that those of us who have TS and have done OK don't tend to advertise it. I am 47 and have was officially diagnosed with TS about 20 years ago. I seem to have gotten worse since childhood, but I've done fine. I'm married with a 15 year old daughter. I have a successful career in computers/engineering, I'm very active (running, cycling, x-country skiing, rock climbing). I do still drive my wife crazy on occasion with tic fits ;-), but my low dose (Pimozide) medication has taken most of the edge off. So there is life with TS! :-)

Love: David C, Miedzianik Say...med-gen-nick: Denver, Colorado, USA: email@example.com PS: Instead of being like Fat Man, and The Diabetic Duo: PPS: I'm now in Denver, Colorado, because my neighbour back in Old England, got me a letter sent out from Rotherham Council, telling me to turn my sterio down. At least I think it was my neighbour ??? And I was there, sitting in my house back there, with NOTHING ON. (No sound on): PPPS: I hope my neighbours back there, can't hear my sterio, from the other side of the atlantic ??? PPPPS: I think the drug HALOPERIDOL deadens your hearing, to loud sounds, after you've been on them A LONG TIME ??? PPPPPS: I've now been off HALOPERIDOL about 2 years, and I'm now REAL SLIM, like I've said: Before that I was on them about 36 years: PPPPPPS: A doctor once told me, that he wanted me, to just try those HALOPERIDOL for 1 month. PPPPPPPS: Each day of this month lasted over a year. PPPPPPPPS: This month had very long days didn't it ??? PPPPPPPPPS: Once again, I HOPE, I can STOP OFF THESE FOR GOOD, now ???

Thank you so much for a great website on Tourette Syndrome. I've read so much on TS looking for information as I am so sure (I know he has) that my son (6yrs old) has it and have cried & agonised over it for the last year. My tears have started to lessen & the agony is not so bad after reading what you had to say. From today onwards I am going to focus on my son instead of when the tics are going to stop & start up again. Thank you for giving me hope & the strength not to give up on my darling son.

Have found Geodon and Clonazapam to be effective but if they have what is called encoprisis, which is a bowel problem then be careful because this medicine can cause constipation. We have been see a local neurologist but, we are nodw looking for a new doctor some where in the area that specializes in TS. If there is any one that knows of someone in or around South Dakota would you please let me know?

Sorry folks, but I agree with Dr. Laura. A wedding is all about the bride and groom. If they are selfish, and insensitive enough to not want anyone there with concerns, issues, or problems, thats just fine, they just need to understand that that means, NO cards, gifts, invites and possibly very limited contact with the hurt, slighted, and offended family members. Personally, I wish my wedding reception could have been limited to guests 16 years and up, as children cause distractions, and most of them are unruly.

My son was diagnoised with TS when he was 6. He shakes his head like his hair is in his face,he also blinks and opens his eyes wide at times. It does not bother him that he shakes his head, but I'm scared that when he gets older if the tics don't go away he will be teased. The site has helped us alot THANK-YOU.

Our 7 year old son with Aspergers recently developed serious motor and vocal tics. We are beside ourselves at this juncture, as the tics are definitely cauing him to stand out among his peers even though he is already is a special needs program at a private school. It is so heartbreaking to watch and even more heartbreaking to hear that there is nothing we can do for him. He does not yet have a Tourettes diagnosis, but I am sure it is coming once the tics persist. Isn't there anything we can do for him? Isn't there a nationally renowned expert we can take him to? Although our son, age 7, has not been officially diagnosed with ts, I have no doubt this is the case. The first symptoms appeared around age 5. This was eye blinking, then sniffing, then facial grimmaces, strange knee-knocking while walking, and most recently a rapid neck bending motion (face upwards to sky). It seems worse when he is playing sports (which he loves and does very well in) and is trying to perform well in some way, such as taking a test. My other concerns are behaviors such as anxiety and panicky behaviors including crying, stomach aches, headaches, etc. when going to school. He also seems to be intolerant of others' behaviors, especially misbehavior of others, including his friends. I am concerned that he will begin to be picked-on at school because of his tics and the fact that he is not very outgoing. Although he is extremely bright, athletic, and very well-behaved in school, and his teachers say he gets along well with others, I can't help but feel there is just SOMETHING else going on with him. I would really appreciate any advice, information on your experiences with similar children, or just anything you could tell me in figuring out what this sounds like to you.

I was so happy to find your site and read your story. I have 3 sons, 2 of whom have TS. They're fraternal twins. One son was "diagnosed" last year, but I had unofficially diagnosed him many years ago. I'm in the health care profession (rehabilitation, to be specific), so I have been exposed to many individuals with varying conditions. My other son revealed some tics that he has but hides well, although I notice them at times. He, on his own, tells me that he knows he has TS but doesn't feel the need to go to a Neurologist at this point. I respect his decision. When I received my son's diagnosis, it didn't affect me in the least. Both my sons (13 years of age) sound like yours. Honors students, musicians, one into acting and singing, friends, social and, most importantly, kind/altruistic people. I've realized some possible OCD traits. No matter how hard he tries, my diagnosed son can't get out of the shower before 20 minutes. My suspicion is that he has a ritual. He washes his hands frequently (not noticable to others), but he also has never been sick or lost a day of school! When I told my sons to stop bugging him about the shower since it may not be something he can control, his response was: "I like having TS. Now I can blame EVERYTHING on it!" We have to keep in mind not to let him get away with too much, since we don't want secondary gain to occur with this diagnosis!! I'm also reflecting on my life and certain things are making so much sense for me, since I feel as though I'm an undiagnosed TS individual. I've had many symptoms in past years, very subtle, but I've known I had them. I blamed things totally on stress and anxiety, and now I have answers for them!! I don't think it's an accident that I'm in the rehabilitation field. My oldest son (16) has not exhibited any TS symptoms. I realize the waxing and waning of TS, but I feel prepared for anything. I love my children, we have a good, open relationship, and we'll be able to deal with whatever comes our way. I'm not opposed to getting help if it's needed. In fact, my oldest sons friend has TS, and I've spoken to his mother. I've told parents of my son's closest friends, and there kids didn't even notice. They just thought Matt's tics were just "Matthew." How wonderful!! Thanks for letting me share my story, and thanks for sharing yours. What a wonderful site you've created!!

Hello. I am a architecture student at the Technical University Eindhoven (the Netherlands) and I am working on an assignment about people diagnosed with the Tourette Syndrom. I am a mother of a 9 year old boy that was diagnosed with TS and OCD at the age of 6. Theses disorders are very misunderstood in the general public. At this time we are having a difficult time with his school and with some family members. The school has little information about these disorders thus very little understanding. At this time I am searching sites to aquire information for the people in my son's life.

I stumbled across this site while looking for information on chronic motor tics. I think I have undiagnosed OCD, possible slight TS. I have many tics that drive me up a wall! It gets worse in public because I try to not do them, which causes stress. Many of them include the cracking of my knuckles, especially my thumbs which are very sore yet I can't stop. I just added this site to my favorites so I can peruse it more often and join the message board. I just wanted to give kudos to the web designer. Even though she has the disclaimer at the bottom of the page that says she is "just a mom" (cute) I think this web site is wonderfully informational and well put together. I will hopefully get health insurance soon and be able to get some help with my obsessions and tics. Thanks for the site! :)

Hey there, I'm glad websites like this are up to inform people about Tourette. I'm suffering with Tourette since my 6th, am 21 now, so I have quite a lot of experience under my belt. I learnt how to deal with Tourette, particulary as I got older. I gained more confidence and people in my environment learnt that acceptance is the best 'cure', or at least the best way to reduce it as much as possible. It's going really well 'cause my tics nearly vanished actually. :) I got an horrible peak when I was 11, 12. Anyway, I'm a happy man now who just leads an ordinary life. For all the people who're going through tough phases, I'd say keep fighting, because there once will come a day that you'll realise you're nothing less than people who ain't suffering with tourette. Love ya all! <3

I came to this web site by way of doing research for a paper for a class. I must add I am a senior learner and really didn't know why I choose Tourette syndrome when the instructor assigned a paper on any disease you wish to explore. After doing research on TS I realized that there were children I went to elementary school, over fifty years ago, that probably had undiagnosed TS and I shutter to think how I teased them along with my fellow classmates. How ironic that in later life I became a medical social worker specializing in neurologic disorders. Life has a way of teaching us the lessons we need to learn. Keep up you vaulable work in bring hope and information for these are two mighty tools to a brighter future.

Hello My son Jordan was diagnosed with ts when he was 11 years old. He is now 21 years old and a fine young man. He was diagnosed with ts, adhd and obsessive compulsive disorder. Jordan is going to college and works part time as an assistant chef for a greek restaurant. I am very proud of my son. He has overcome many challenges and works hard every day. I couldn't ask for a better son and I am extremely proud of him. His ts is very mild now. It does wax and wane and right now he is not on any medication. He was on halperidol, paxil and ritilin. If he feels the need to go back on the meds he will. I am very glad I found this website and hope others will never give up on themselves and those they know who are afflicted with this.

Hi my son was diagnosed with Ts when he was 4 years old. I have never heard about until he was diagnosed. He is 17 now and the older he gets the more ticks he has. The school where he goes is giving him a hard time. I got so tried of them saying he was a bad kid, that i went to the book store and bought this book called "Teaching the Tiger". The school principle read the book and thank me for the information. I do alot of research on Ts to see if any new information is wondering around. Just remember that you are not alone keep finding new information and learn more on Ts. I have learned alot these past 13 years and still learning. One more thing join a Ts support group it helps to talk to other people who has Ts or has a family member with it.

I am a 26 year old male who has just discovered I have tics. I am currently in search for a specialist in Iowa City who can help me. My Dr. here put me on the med. Haloperidol 2MG and it makes me numb and dillusional, I can not sleep, work or function in public since I have been on this med. I can only hope it is right for me and keep taking it until I find a specialist. That is why I am visiting this site. The site made me feel better to read about cases like mine. Keep it up and Thank you!

I just found my way to your website as part of my researching PANDAS and the recent movement disorder/tics/ocd behaviours that my son developed after another bout with strep. I'm so glad, so thankful, that I found yours as one of the first, and not one of the other more pessimistic sites. Thank you! Those two little words seem so inadequate but it's all I have. I'm 45 years old with a 21 yo and an 8 yo. I've tic'd all my life, that I can remember. Was humiliated by my parents and family far more than by friends. Never realized just how many TS symptoms, OCD and ADD symptoms I have until today. We are going to a pyschologist tomorrow. Don't know that he'll be able to deal with TS, at least in a positive way, but we were initially seeing him because of the 8yo's depression from the recent movement disorder and how it has isolated him. Anyway...this knowledge puts a new spin on things. We'll see how the psychologist approaches this. I do see so many symptoms of TS with both my boys, myself, my siblings, nephews, and father. Husband has some TS symptoms, OCD and ADD symptoms and so does his siblings and mother. Also alcoholism runs rampant in our families and it was surprising to see the comment in FAQ's about how TS is related to a disorder in dopamine, just like the biochemical markers of alcoholism. I think our families have probably been self-medicating all these years with the alcohol. Hmmmm. Interesting. Again, thanks so much for your undying effort, compassion, and concern. You've made the world a better place, with or without TS.

I have read quite a bit of information with regard to TS online, and this is the first site that left me with hope, that allowed me to understand that I do not have to find a cure for my daughter, and that I was in fact concentrating on her diagnosis. I feel so much better!!!! Thanks for providing a better path to follow.

As a future educator, I am producing a microtheme for a college course regarding Tourette's Syndrome. I have searched your website and would like to use some of the valuable information contained here. I would like to have your permission to quote you, and I would also like permission to use your name in the author section of my references. I would appreciate your help! Sincerely, Kimberly Dwyer

My son is 12 and has Tourettes. We are going through a difficult time right now with his behaviour rather than his 'ticcing'. He is a lovly, kind boy 99% of the time.. but his temper and stubborness gets the better of him the rest of the time causing rows and unhappiness for us all. We have done lots of research about what he is or may be going through and it has started to help the way we handle certain situations. We have come to understand that he doesnt see most things as 'getting his own way' but more a case of something that he 'has to do' like a compulsion.. and untill he has completed whatever it is, then he is agitated and unruly. Finding this out has helped a lot. All we can do is support him, and show him lots of love as often he says he feels like his life is over and he wishes he wasnt here. Hopefully he will improve as he gets older and has a better understanding of TS. max

My son,age 8, has T.S. and I guess it bothers me more than him.I get such anxiety over "what if kids make fun of him " I keep it to myself and act as if the facial moves and sounds aren't even happening and just go on, but inside my heart just aches for him.I also worry about him getting in trouble at school for it even though I have told the teacher about it.(Im not sure she gets it )Some of his friends have asked him why he makes faces and he tells them nothing is happening or just ignores them. I dont know if that is the best thing to do or not. He knows its happening and i think he trys to supress it sometimes. I also need to know what to do with obsessive compulsive situations.I saw this sight and it looked like a positive place to be. I say so what to TS , but I feel diferently inside.I hope I will find some answers so I can be strong and supportive for my son. Thanks

Regarding the Dr. Laura issue: If I go to a family wedding with my child and he/she can even possibly be noisy, then I make sure and only go to the reception because I do not want to cause undo attention that takes away from the ceremony. If the bride came to me and said, "Please bring your child, I really want him/her there", then I might think about it.

I have a 23yr old son who has,Touretts, Obsesive Compulsive&Manick Depression. He's graduated from Bartlett Learning Center & is employed at the Naperville Library, which he enjoys emensly. What Mike doesn't have is a social group he can go to & make friends. Would anyone have an idea on where we can find something like that in our area? Mike's a happy guy as a rule but he does get depressed that he doesn't have friends. I'll be looking forward to any info you could send our way.THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hi, I'm a mother of three, and my middle boy who is 7 is my concern. He has not been diagnosed with TS, but I am wondering if he could have it. He does have a consistent habit of clearing his throat, stretching his nose and mouth, and lets out a scream every now and again. My husband and I have not really thought about TS to each other, but recently I started to think about TS and is that what the problem is. I just need to hear from other parents who's child is diagnosed with TS, and what made them seek help, or how were they diagnosed with TS. I don't have a computer at home, right now I am in the library, and I can only come here every two days or so, so I will check in periodically. Thanks Sharon.
